Casa de Granca Feliz project – House of the happy child project
What is the project
about
REACH International UK is a major donor of the Casa de Granca Feliz project – House of the Happy Child project, a day centre for children and young adults in one of the favelas in Hortolândia Municipality, Brazil. Since 2004, the project is helping hundreds of disadvantaged children realise their dreams and reach their full potential. The centre promotes and encourages education and provides a safe environment for growth. We have gained the trust of the local community and local government.
What has been done
The project provides a safe and structured environment in which to play, learn and develop. This safe environment is a precious privilege for children from families dealing with addictions, extreme poverty and the impact of crime, one most of us take for granted. The centre provides three meals a day to ensure the children receive adequate nutrition. All children have a space to study and do homework. The centre also offers opportunities to learn and develop various craft skills. Also, volunteers encourage children to take part in activities which aid their physical development and the development of positive self-image and personalities. In addition, volunteers regularly organise puppet shows and group singing sessions which encourage the children to express their feelings.
Our future plans
The number of children attending the project is constantly increasing. The project started with 70 children attending every week in 2004. Today, the project has more than 130 children a day attending activities and we are expecting this number to extend further. The growing interest of local children and community is an evidence that there is a need for services we are providing to the local community of children. The increasing number of children brings joy to us but also new challenges for the project. We would like to invite you to join us in our work. The project currently needs Air Conditioning units to maintain a suitable temperature inside of premises during the warm season. In addition, children need a projector to make sure children can see instructions, songs and presented material during activities.
